After 16 years in print, VIBE magazine, one of the biggest urban magazines ever, will no longer be in publication. Earlier this year due to the recession, the magazine begin to cut: employee hours, salaries, circulation, and frequency to try and survive the economic crisis. In addition to the recession, the magazine was also losing advertising. The staff and contributors were all very sad to receive the news but went out with pride.
Here is a statement from the editor-in-chief, Danyel Smith:
"On behalf the VIBE CONTENT staff (the best in this business), it is with great sadness, and with heads held high, that we leave the building today. We were assigning and editing a Michael Jackson tribute issue when we got the news. It's a tragic week in overall, but as the doors of VIBE Media Group close, on the eve of the magazine's sixteenth anniversary, it's a sad day for music, for hip hop in particular, and for the millions of readers and users who have loved and who continue to love the VIBE brand. We thank you, we have served you with joy, pride and excellence, and we will miss you." (Statement)
No further info about what will happen with the displaced employees or anything like that, is available at this time. Should any further info be released, I will do another post.
Damn, this is pretty sad news to hear. I was not a major reader or anything but just to know that they got hit by the recession, is deep. They were a huge publication and did alot for urban journalism when they first started. Oh well, guess everyone is truly feeling the impact of this crisis. My heart goes out to all the employees and journalists, hope they find a way to bounce back. Or at least have something to fall back on. Stay strong ya'll, we gone make it through this. -MinM
