After much hype and tons of teasers, this video is finally complete. So let's take a look and see if Drake and Trey Songz can turn their "Successful" song into a successful video.
A few notes about the track and video. This version is the one without Lil Wayne's verse on it. Trey did a verse to replace the gap. Also, Drake says the inspiration for this track came from where he was at in his life at the time. He was in a very dark and complicated place. He was confused about his career, having some personal issues, and in a very trying relationship with a female. For the video, again it was directed by Jake Davis as I mentioned in the preview post I did a while back. And it was shot in Toronto, Canada at night.
The video opens with a shot of Drake looking out of a huge window at night. Lots of lights and tall buildings reflect in the window, actually very pretty scenery. Next we see Trey sitting on the edge of a bed with a female stretched out next to him. From there some calls are made, resulting in Drake and Trey getting together for a late night cruise around Toronto. In addition to this, there are multiple shots of the duo chilling on a balcony type of area, with the earlier mentioned city scenery behind them. The balcony shots are done with Drake and Trey solo, as well as together. The video wraps with a fading shot of the city and a quote from President Barack Obama on making your mark on the world.
Ok, so this video isn't horrible. It's got some nice scenery and a good vibe going. Jake Davis shot it very well. However, it's BORING as hell! There is nothing to it; no theme, no plot, no action, nada. I understand it was supposed to be dark and intense to reflect the song, but damn. They could have gave us something. Some flash backs of like a rags to riches story, maybe acted out the lyrics, anything but this mess. I love Trey and Drake, but do NOT want to just sit and watch them drive for five minutes. After all the hoopla, I am very disappointed. I get that Drake was trying to redeem himself from the last video, but I think he toned it down TOO much. Maybe he will get it right on the third one. This one is a start, but fell EXTREMELY short! I'd say pass and just bump the track. You won't miss much. -MinM
