Public Enemy is taking a new route for their next album. They are putting the financial aspects of it, in the hands of the fans. They are doing this in a collaboration with the company, SellaBand.
SellaBand is an online company that allows fans to fund albums for their favorite artists. Public Enemy has raised about $50,000 so far and is looking to reach a goal of about $250,000. The money will be used for album production and the worldwide marketing plan. And fans could stand to profit off of this venture as well. Contributors can get anything from: t-shirts, to producer credits, to actual profits from the album sales. Public Enemy leader Chuck D thinks this is a great new idea. He feels this puts the fans on board from the very beginning and gives them more of an input. Kind of a music industry in reverse type of thing. In addition to the new album, Chuck D also wants to start mentoring some of the younger artists in the game today. First up would be Gucci Mane. As he wants to smooth things over from some previous words between the two, that were said in connection with Jay Z's number one status in the game. No further info is available about the album at this time. When more becomes available, I'll do an update. If you would like to donate to the album, click here.
I think this is a very clever idea. My only thing is as a fan, I'd be cautious to invest money into an album. Artists these days don't make the most quality music and I'd be upset if I invested in something that I couldn't support. I'm sure most people feel that way, especially with the economy in it's current state. So it's a bit of a gamble, you'd have to trust the artists to do right with your money. But overall, I really like this idea. I wish Public Enemy good luck with their goal. They surprisingly have raised a good chunk of money already. -MinM
