1520 Sedgwick Avenue, a Hip-Hop landmark will be honored by a New York Art Committee for it's cultural importance to the city. The address is a part of Hip-Hop history, as it was the place where DJ Kool Herc threw a small party inside of a rec room back in August of 1973. The party would go on to be a major cornerstone in getting Hip-Hop out and flourishing in the Bronx area in the early 1970's. The address is one of an exclusive six places that will be honored by City Lore and the Municipal Art Society. Sedgwick is looked at by residents as the birthplace of Hip-Hop and the place where the genre not only began; but grew into a major culture and would go on to not only greatly impact New York City but the entire world. In 2007, Sedgwick became eligible to be declared a cultural and historical landmark in New York City due to it's role in the origins of Hip-Hop. City Lore is a non-profit organization that started in 1986. It's purpose is to produce programs and events that show off New York's cultural heritage.
This is another great moment for Hip-Hop. I am happy for Herc and the other pioneers who are involved. This is definitely something to be proud to take part in. I would like to know more details about the honors ceremony though. Anyways, I hope that Herc and the others enjoy their moment. And props to City Lore and the Municipal Art Society for the recognition too. That says a lot about just how much Hip-Hop really has impacted the world today. -MinM
