Russell Simmons has more television plans up his sleeve. This time around, he's headed to Comedy Central. The Hip-Hop mogul is working on a new comedy venture.
He will be executive producer of the new show, it will tape in Los Angeles, and will run for about 30 minutes. The show is a stand up comedy series that features three up and coming comics in each episode. There will be a deejay on deck to provide music and the project will reunite Simmons with his fellow executive producer Stan Lathan. This will be the duo's biggest comedy piece since the epic series, Def Comedy Jam. Def Comedy Jam is credited with launching the careers of some of today's biggest comedians, including: Martin Lawrence, Chris Tucker, Mo'Nique, Mike Epps, and numerous others. Simmons is hoping that the new show will launch just as many careers for the future of comedy. Reps from Comedy Central are equally excited about the new show. They respect the success of Def Comedy Jam and feel that Simmons and Lathan have another potential epic series on their hands. The series has no specific release date yet, but will hopefully hit the air sometime this Summer. No further info about this show is available at the moment, should more details develop, I'll update accordingly.
This is exciting news, I liked Def Comedy Jam a lot. I was always disappointed that I couldn't see more of it. And I respect Simmons' hustle, he is a great example of a success story in the hip-hop community. Definitely looking forward to including this in my Summer television line up. Anyone else interested in seeing the show? -MinM
