Widely popular retailer Wal-Mart, is catching some heat for the way the retailer has chosen to embrace Black History Month. The retailer chose to promote and give deals on Hip-Hop documentaries in honor of the special month.
Which wouldn't be a big deal, but they chose to do so while refusing to support a documentary about the history of Blacks in the military. The documentary is entitled, For Love of Liberty: The Story of America’s Patriots and was done by a man named Frank Martin. Also, beloved actress Halle Berry hosts the documentary and it's narrated by Avery Brooks. And other big named actors are said to make appearances in the film as well. The film lasts for about four hours. People are upset because they feel the documentary is a more positive and appropriate representation of what Black History Month is for, then Hip-Hop is. Also, they feel like it sends out the wrong message to youth about the importance of African American history and all that Blacks went through to make things better for those of us around today. However, reps from Wal-Mart say they had no intention of offending anybody or devaluing any history. The retailer's only intent was to do what they felt was best for business. And the Hip-Hop documentaries were what was the easiest to keep in stock and the best projected seller. No further info is available at this time, should anything more develop, I'll update.
I'm not sure how to feel about this but I understand both sides. However, people should know that a retailer as big as Wal-Mart is all about the money. Especially, since we are still struggling with the economy. I think they could have carried both and just made everybody happy. But oh well, it is what it is. Anyone else have any thoughts on this? Drop a line or two in the comment section, let's discuss.-MinM
