Guess Hip-Hop heads would have a hard time living in Australia, as it seems rap music is not allowed to be played there to some extent. That's right, a 19 year old male will face charges soon for listening to Australian rapper, Kid Selzy in public. The young male, Nathan Wilkie, was waiting for his mother in the parking lot of a grocery store.
While he was waiting, he was listening to Kid Selzy's cd. When he saw his mother emerge from the store with bags, he got out of his vehicle and went to help her. He left his door open and stereo playing. This all sounds like normal behavior right? Local Australian police didn't seem to think so. They pulled in behind Wilkie and are now charging him with offensive behavior. The charge stems from the explicit content of the music. The police deemed the music offensive and derogatory towards women. Wilkie is the first person ever to receive this charge, under these circumstances. Wilkie is scheduled to go to trial on June 11, 2010. He will not be alone though. His mother will be in attendance of course. Additionally, she feels slightly guilty about the whole ordeal. She believes if her son hadn't been trying to help her, the police would have never caught him. But the biggest person scheduled to appear at the trial is Kid Selzy himself. Wilkie's mother reached out to the rapper via Myspace, about the situation and he felt the need to show up in court. He feels the trial is a waste of time and money. Also, that the police need to focus on more important things, like the unsolved murders of his friends for example. To top the whole trial off, the album that incited the charge, The Creepshow, will be played in court as well. Wilkie says he plans on pleading not guilty during the trial. No further info is available about the situation at this time. As things progress, I will do an update.
This is some crazy stuff, I didn't even know they allowed laws like this. America may not be perfect, but at least you don't have to worry about doing time for bumping some 2Pac or Jay Z. It's the little things that we take for granted. Smh, I wish Wilkie the best of luck. I think it's a great look for Kid Selzy to be appearing in court too. More rappers should advocate for their art form. -MinM
