Today marks the anniversary of rap great The Notorious B.I.G.'s death. Though I am not a huge fan, a lot of the readers are. Also, I have much respect for the dead. So check out one of my favorite Biggie songs ever, "Big Poppa."
The production here is hot, goes very hard. There is a heavy bass, keyboard sound effects, and a snapping element at work. A hood / street vibe is definitely being given off by the beat on this track. The hook is alright, a little simple lyrics wise though. The verses don't get much better either. They contain the typical: angry, loud, and violent style that Lil Jon is known for in his more gangsta tracks. In addition to being typical in style, the lyrics leave a lot to be desired. The lyrics are choppy and very amateur sounding. There is an occasional slick line or two but nothing to get excited about. Jon is a vet in the rap game and therefore should have came way harder with his rhymes. His creativity, word play, and delivery all need some serious work done on this cut. In the end, I'd say download the instrumental and keep it pushing. However, we include the tracks for the readers to make their own judgments. So go ahead and click the link, you just might like it. I doubt it, but you never know. -MinM
The production here is hot. It has a heavy bass, a light instrument, and a very hood vibe to it. The hook is simple but pretty catchy. And it's real talk, talk that has been heatedly debated over time, but real yet and still. Men sleep around and get love, women sleep around and get sh--t for it. It's not fair and to me anybody who sleeps around is a ho. Gender don't have nothing to do with it, if you nasty, you nasty. And that is all there is to it. Anyways, the verses here are fair, not as good as one would expect though. Ludacris kicks things off and does his thing. He had his typical quick and clever rhymes, but nothing that really stood out. Lil Kim came in next and her rhymes were mediocre at best. A song with this kind of theme, is something that fans expect Kim to shine on. She could have went so much harder and really ripped it for the ladies. Lil Fate closes out the track with a roller coaster type of verse. It started off weak, got better in the middle, and then got weak again as he finished it off. He too is capable of better lyricism. Overall, this track is straight. Not the best thing to leak off of Battle Of The Sexes, but it's still spin worthy. Please check it out and decide for yourself though. -MinM
Good news for E-40 fans, the West Coat veteran is making his return to the game in a big way. Next month, he will drop not one but two comeback albums. These will make his 13th and 14th solo efforts. The albums will be titled: Revenue Retrievin’ The Day Shift andRevenue Retrievin’ The Night Shift.
Feels like it's been ages since there was a mixtape review on the site. So it was a must to take advantage of this opportunity to do a new one and introduce a new artist all at one time. Goose is an up and coming cat who was born in Syracuse and relocated to Florida. It wasn't until after high school that the young rapper had the courage to go full throttle in pursuit of his career. In 2006, he was featured on the Madden 2007 soundtrack. And since then has endured a lot, to get to the point where he was ready to release his first full mixtape. It's titled Homeless In Hollywood and can be described as, “... being in a familiar place and unfamiliar place at the same time (Goose).” The review starts after the jump.
This week's episode of Fredro Starr's Tales Of The Industry is a special one. The reason is because, it's the season finale. That's right this is the last episode of the hit internet series for the time being. Fredro Starr takes the series out on a major note, as he talks about his relationship with Biggie. They weren't best friends or nothing, but they spent a significant amount of time hanging out prior to the legendary rapper's death. They partied together at a special event, held a private listening session for a major album in hip-hop history, and did a few extracurricular activities as well. Get all the juicy details below.
This was a decent episode, could have been a little more exciting since it was the season finale though. I wonder is he going to go for another season. I think he probably has a few good tales left in him. What do you guys think? Leave a comment and let us know your thoughts. -MinM
Ludacris has finally started making some head way with his upcoming album, Battle Of The Sexes. This is the video for his first single called, "How Low." Let's give it a good old fashioned review, shall we?
This week's tale takes a slight detour from the usual rap theme. It gives fans a little more insight into Fredro Starr the actor. He was put into the acting game by veteran actor Forest Whitaker and made his debut in the movie Strapped. Next, he goes on to unveil his first Hollywood adventure with a fallen rap legend. Find out what caught Fredro off guard about Hollywood and led him to an awkward moment. Also later, hear what happened when Fredro met:Mark Wahlberg, Justin Timberlake, Michael Rapaport, and several other big time industry cats. Tune in below for all the intriguing details.
This was probably my favorite story. It was really cool to hear all that about the different actors and whatnot. Regardless of what any one says, I love Fredro's swagger. The stories wouldn't be complete without his little animations, lol. -MinM
This is a little late, so sorry for the delay. This week's edition of Fredro Starr's Tales Of The Industry features a story about the time Onyx performed their song "Walk In New York," in Los Angeles during the infamous East Coast / West Coast beef. Check things out below.
This was interesting to watch. It was cool to hear someone's perspective on the beef besides the usual suspects. And it took some guts to perform that song with everything that was going on at that time. So this was another good tale from Fredro. -MinM
Jay Z, Rihanna, Mary J. Blige, Keri Hilson, and a few other artists have all managed to receive nominations for this year's 41st annual NAACP Image Awards. Hov leads the pack with five nominations, including: outstanding male artist and outstanding album. Alicia Keys follows suit with about three nods. And Rihanna and Mary come in next with about two nominations each. The other big news is that the movie Precious, starring Mo'nique and Mariah Carey is also up for several nominations as well. The nods include: acting categories, best movie, and best director. This makes for the second year that big time music artists dominated the awards. Last year Jennifer Hudson and Russell Simmons were the big winners. The winners will be announced during the live awards ceremony. The awards will air on Friday, February 26, 2010 around 8pm -10pm ET/PT on FOX.
I don't usually watch these awards or anything but I appreciate the nominations. It's always a good look for hip-hop to be acknowledged at a positive and prestigious event. So much props and congrats to Hov for holding it down. And I'm happy for the other nominees as well, I wish them the best of luck. Anybody plan on tuning in or watching? Just curious. -MinM
