Last night's episode of The Boondocks once again reflected the cleverness of Aaron McGruder's imagination. Who else would be able to take a classic Horror movie and combine it with a classic Hip-Hop movie, to make a statement about today's out of control youth? Check out the episode "Smoking With Cigarettes," below.
The thing that makes the urban adult cartoon, The Boondocks, so controversial is it's bold and sarcastic approach to the issues that plague the African American community. From typical problems like racism to more rare/extreme ones, like Hurricane Katrina; the cartoon has covered it all. This week's episode touched on the declining state of rappers and Hip-Hop. It did so by killing off one of the show's most infamous rappers, Thugnificent. Thugnificent was symbolic of your typical hot rapper for the moment. He had a huge hit single, blew his money on a lot of luxury items, and milked his popularity for all he could. But like tons of ignorant rappers today, he fell off. He got into tax problems, he lost all his stuff, he fell victim to poor music trends and petty beefs, and his music stopped selling. After all was said and done, he ended up working for UPS. You can see the tragic, yet comedic tale after the jump.
The urban animated series The Boondocks, has always shown love to the Hip-Hop world. From it's opening song, to it's crazy and likeable characters, the show has no shortage of the Hip-Hop culture reflected in it. The show has even featured some big names from the game, like Busta Rhymes and Snoop Dogg. So since it has been renewed for a third and supposedly final season, which kicks off tomorrow (5/2/2010), I felt it only right to drop the preview of the first episode for the readers. The episode is entitled "It's A Black President, Huey Freeman" and has a strong President Barack Obama theme going on.
This looks like it's going to be a good opener for the new season. I think Aaron McGruder is going to rustle some feathers with this episode. But he is no stranger to doing that with this cartoon. That just happens to be one of the many things that I love about it. Are there any other major Boondocks fans out there? Leave a comment with your thoughts about the new season and the premiere episode. The season will air on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim line up, Sundays at 11:30pm Eastern Standard time. -MinM
Russell Simmons has more television plans up his sleeve. This time around, he's headed to Comedy Central. The Hip-Hop mogul is working on a new comedy venture.
Faith Evans is the next former big named celebrity to hit the reality television market. The show is a result of a partnership between Faith, E1 Television, and Ten2One Entertainment. The show will be titled, It's All About Faith. The show will focus on Faith's attempt to return to music after a five year absence, as well as her personal life. All three parties are excited about the new show and think it will be compelling entertainment for viewers. Faith's return comes roughly about a year after her tell all book that dropped last year. It was entitled, Keep the Faith: A Memoir, and focuses primarily on her relationship with the late Biggie Smalls. Her last musical effort was in 2005, when Faith transitioned from Bad Boy Records to Capitol Records. The album was titled, The First Lady and received luke warm reviews amongst fans and critics. No further information is available about Faith's new show at this time. I will keep fans posted, as details drop in the future.
I like Faith and all, but reality series are no longer a good look. They are just forms of mindless entertainment for bloggers to rip up and bored people to tweet about, lol. And she has lost a lot of relevance, so it's gone take a whole lot for her to make a successful comeback. I hope she has a back up plan, I don't see this reality show thing going too far. -MinM
Queen Latifah and her Flavor Unit company have established a deal with VH1 for a new project. And before you flip out, no it is NOT another reality show. It's a made for TV venture. The project is a comedic drama about two best friends and their views on relationships. The piece was untitled at press time but is set to take place in Atlanta, Georgia. The two female characters are African American of course and their names will be Keisha and Val. Keisha is a former video dancer and Val is an up and coming fashion mogul. Latifah and some of her Flavor Unit associates are scheduled to serve as executive producers for the TV effort. This isn't the company's first big production project either. In the past Queen and Flavor Unit have given us gems such as: Beauty Shop, The Perfect Holiday, and a couple other small time yet quality films. According to reports, VH1 is taking on this project as part of the effort to revamp their network with more creative and original content. Apparently, they finally got the hint that all of those reality shows are starting to wear thin on the viewers. No further information is available about Latifah's new venture at this time. However, I'll keep an eye on the progress and update accordingly.
I am excited to see this whenever it comes out. I LOVE Latifah and practically everything that she does. She keeps it real and represents hard in every sense of the word. And it's about time VH1 calmed down with all those damn reality shows. I like reality television and all but they over killing it at this point. Maybe if the shows had a purpose it would be okay, but they don't. They just get dumber and dumber. Also, it's good to see the network embrace something with a positive Black theme to it. The whole coonery bit was getting old too. -MinM
The murders of the late Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G. will be featured on a new VH1 documentary special next month. The documentary is called Famous Crime Scenes. The special will look into numerous celebrity murders/deaths.
Jay Z, Rihanna, Mary J. Blige, Keri Hilson, and a few other artists have all managed to receive nominations for this year's 41st annual NAACP Image Awards. Hov leads the pack with five nominations, including: outstanding male artist and outstanding album. Alicia Keys follows suit with about three nods. And Rihanna and Mary come in next with about two nominations each. The other big news is that the movie Precious, starring Mo'nique and Mariah Carey is also up for several nominations as well. The nods include: acting categories, best movie, and best director. This makes for the second year that big time music artists dominated the awards. Last year Jennifer Hudson and Russell Simmons were the big winners. The winners will be announced during the live awards ceremony. The awards will air on Friday, February 26, 2010 around 8pm -10pm ET/PT on FOX.
I don't usually watch these awards or anything but I appreciate the nominations. It's always a good look for hip-hop to be acknowledged at a positive and prestigious event. So much props and congrats to Hov for holding it down. And I'm happy for the other nominees as well, I wish them the best of luck. Anybody plan on tuning in or watching? Just curious. -MinM
Russell Simmons is getting his own reality series on Oxygen network. The show will be called The Russell Simmons Project and is assistant themed. Meaning that the show will follow Russell's female assistants as they try to juggle working for him with their personal and love lives. The theme was picked due to the fact that it will set the show apart from all other reality shows. Not only is the cast all female but it's diverse as well. Oxygen reps say that Russell is an interesting individual and the unique look at his empire through the eyes of the women behind it; will appeal strongly to their viewers. The production for the show will be done by Simmons' Lathan Media Group and Picture This Television. Simmons says that he wanted to do the show to give some of the people around him who helped build his empire, their time to shine. Also, he too agrees that a look at the company from a different perspective would be unique entertainment for audiences. At this time, there is no word on when the show will air. Any further info becomes available, I'll do an update.
I think this sounds cool. I am kind of over everybody having a reality show though. It's getting a little played out. VH1 is doing a few more starting next month as well. But for those who watch Oxygen, it will probably be an interesting show. I am very shocked that Russell is doing something like this on another note. It seems a little too soft for him. He seems so dramatic and stuff, lol. Anybody plan on watching? -MinM

BEP are up for awards like: Record Of The Year, Best Pop Vocal Album, and Best Dance Recording. West got nods in categories like Best Rap Song/Collabo. Other artists that got a nice amount of nods include Jay Z and Lady Gaga with five and T-Pain managed to pull in about four. Eminem, Flo Rida, Q-Tip, Mos Def, Common, T.I., and Drake are also up for possible wins. This marks the 52nd Grammy Awards show. Everything goes down on January 31, 2010 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. There has been no word on a host or performers yet. Anything becomes available, I'll do an update.
I'm happy for all those who got nods, but I am not real big on the Grammys. The right people never get the awards and that just makes me mad. Also, the performances are usually not that hot. But I haven't caught the Grammys in a while. So depending on who is scheduled to appear, I may tune in. Big Congrats to Bey though, that's hot! -MinM
