Today was a slow day for suitable posting material and just as things looked hopeless, this video caught my attention. This video comes from a young rapper out of Pittsburgh, PA by the name Mac Miller. Miller started exploring his rap skills at the tender age of nine, after being inspired by Slick Rick, OutKast, and countless others. He would go on to form a duo called The Ill Spoken with a fellow Pittsburgh emcee. The group saw some moderate success via mixtapes and live shows. At about the age of 17, Miller decided to continue his journey in the Hip-Hop game as a solo artist. With his style similar to that of the 90's Golden Era Hip-Hop and co-signs by artists like Wiz Khalifa, Miller definitely has the Hip-Hop community talking. His ultimate goals are to put Pittsburgh on the map and make quality/classic music for fans to enjoy. How is he doing in accomplishing said goals? Click play and let's find out.
During June, July, and August (and even including a few
sweat-inducing days in late May), the temperatures rise stratospherically, and
as a result, we trade in our rugged Timberlands for sandals and kicks, dump our
hot chocolate in favor of chocolate ice cream cones, and Sunday home-cooked
dinners turn into outdoor brunches and barbecues on the beach. The extended
daylight recharges our energy, and as a result, are moods are livelier and
happier (take that, winter depression!).
Music connoisseurs like as myself tend to mentally compile
and shuffle personal soundtrack for every mind frame, mood, or place that we’re
in. Of course, this includes the
summertime, and I’m sure that the eponymous, Grammy Award winning 1991 hit by DJ
Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince lands in everyone’s top 5 “summer jam” list
(you know, that track that you HAVE to play at least three times during these
sultry months because it captures how fly you thought you were when you finally
threw on a pair of fresh, white Air Force Ones for the first time all year, or
that euphoric feeling doing the Electric Slide with your grandmother during one
of your weekly cookouts). But you know what? There are some other songs that
also effectively encapsulate those special summertime moments. Check out the
joints I’ve listed that serve that purpose for me. This isn’t a numbered,
all-inclusive list, but you will see something old, something new, something
borrowed, and something…Drake. You’ve been warned.
“Ice Cream”- Raekwon f/ Ghostface Killah, Method Man, and Cappadonna
I was just a chocolate deluxe in training when this song debuted. However, the concoction is mainstay on my summer playlist because it’s a humorously blatant reminder of how the hot sun brings the wolves out: you know, the brothers itching to get a minute (literally, haha) with the fly honey traipsing the city streets rocking those tight, denim short-shorts. Even as a young girl, I knew that if a dude came at me the way that Starky Luv or Cappa did on the track that he would not get any play from me (“I love you like I love my d*ck size” ? No, thanks!) except a big smile for making me laugh.
*Note: Sorry about any problems you may have had viewing this video. Guess iTunes had to try and get their money before the video was totally accessible.
Anyways, this is the song that made me a certified B.o.B fan. Therefore, a video review was a must for this project. Let's click play and check out B.o.B and Miss Hayley Williams doing their thing.
Hip-hop is slow today and I introduced this artist back in April. Therefore a video review seemed like a good choice for a post. So check out John Blu and his brand new video for his smash single "In Love With Yo Booty" below.
Last night's episode of The Boondocks once again reflected the cleverness of Aaron McGruder's imagination. Who else would be able to take a classic Horror movie and combine it with a classic Hip-Hop movie, to make a statement about today's out of control youth? Check out the episode "Smoking With Cigarettes," below.
The thing that makes the urban adult cartoon, The Boondocks, so controversial is it's bold and sarcastic approach to the issues that plague the African American community. From typical problems like racism to more rare/extreme ones, like Hurricane Katrina; the cartoon has covered it all. This week's episode touched on the declining state of rappers and Hip-Hop. It did so by killing off one of the show's most infamous rappers, Thugnificent. Thugnificent was symbolic of your typical hot rapper for the moment. He had a huge hit single, blew his money on a lot of luxury items, and milked his popularity for all he could. But like tons of ignorant rappers today, he fell off. He got into tax problems, he lost all his stuff, he fell victim to poor music trends and petty beefs, and his music stopped selling. After all was said and done, he ended up working for UPS. You can see the tragic, yet comedic tale after the jump.
Haven't done anything with Wale for a while and this track is a fan favorite from his album. Therefore, it seemed like a good idea to review the video. So without further delay, let's get to it.
In light of the previous harsh concert review, decided to see if Lupe Fiasco's new video could provide some saving grace. The track is called "I'm Beamin" and it is the second single off of his upcoming studio album, Lasers. Let's check it out.
Drake just debuted his video for the first official single off of his first official album, Thank Me Later. The track is called "Over" and the video was shot in Los Angeles and was directed by Anthony Mandler. Let's see if Drake has stepped his video skills up any, shall we?
